Hip Hopにはまっていった大きな理由の1つに、スクラッチがあります。
DMC World DJ Championshipsの存在を知り、ビデオテープを通販で購入して、何回も見ることでビートジャグリングやスクラッチを研究しました。
その技術を盗むのに必死でビデオテープ巻き戻しては再生し、ターンテーブルに向かい、またビデオを再生しを繰り返し行っていました。
日本のDJも独自のスタイルを持っていて素晴らしかったですが、A-Trak (Canada)やCraze (USA)は、特にかっこよかったです。
Invisibl Skratch PiklzやX-Ecutioners,BeatJunkies等の、複数人で演奏するターンテブリストの事も知り、ますますHip Hopの面白さにはまっていきました。
X-EcutionersのRob Swiftのアルバムで"The Ablist"に収録されているフレアスクラッチの音がかっこよく、どうしても自分でこの音を出したいと思い、練習していた記憶があります。
西海岸のアンダーグラウンドシーンは特徴的で、Dilated PeoplesはバトルDJにはまっていく経緯で知りました。
Peanut Butter Wolf – My Vinyl Weighs A Tonに収録されているBeat JunkiesのDJでもあるDJ Babuのスクラッチが素晴らしく、何度も何度も聴いて練習した記憶があります。
そんなDJ Babu率いるDilated Peoplesから"Worst Comes To Worst"を紹介したいと思います。
Scratch is one of the big reasons I got into Hip Hop.
Knowing the existence of DMC World DJ Championships, I bought videotapes online and watched them many times to study beat juggling and scratching.
Desperately trying to steal the technique, I rewound and played the videotape, headed to the turntable, and played the video over and over again.
Japanese DJs also had their own style and it was great, but A-Trak (Canada) and Craze (USA) were especially cool.
I also learned about turn tebrists who play with multiple people, such as Invisibl Skratch Piklz, X-Ecutioners, and Beat Junkies, and I became more and more interested in Hip Hop.
The sound of the flare scratch recorded in "The Ablist" on the Rob Swift album of X-Ecutioners is cool, and I remember practicing because I really wanted to make this sound myself.
The underground scene on the west coast is characteristic, and Dilated Peoples learned how I became addicted to battle DJs.
The scratches from Beat Junkies DJ Babu on Peanut Butter Wolf – "My Vinyl Weighs A Ton" are great and I remember listening and practicing over and over again.
